1964 to 1966
The period from 1964 to 1969 was the busiest time for Frank's record keeping and there are so many reports and photographs that we have split it into two categories. This one begins with the new school term in September 1964 and runs until the end of 1966. Most of the photographs taken during this period have been linked to individual walks apart from a few in 1964, which are used to fill gaps.
Grindslow Knoll
Boarded 9.20am train from Marple to Edale, arriving Edale at about 9.55am. Proceeded quietly through the village to the Nag's Head and then along the path towards Lower Booth, but diverted up the track towards Grindslow Knoll.
The weather was cold, but not grim. There was much snow around and the cloud base was about 12 - 15,000 ft. All the Kinder plateau was in cloud. Met one man from Marple who was out for a little practice ski-ing - did not catch his name.

Alport Bridge, Hamlet & Castles
Party travelled by Cooke's bus to Alport Bridge, arriving there at about 10am. The weather was wet and the forecast suggested a generally wet day.
The planned route was Alport Bridge, Alport Hamlet, Alport Castles, and then right up the valley to Grains in the Water, then across the bogs and down the Crooked Clough and Shelf Brook to Glossop where it was intended we should board a 5.15 duplicate bus for Marple. The route was followed as planned, but the timing was out by more than an hour.

Grindsbrook Gorge
It had been planned that a bus should take a larger party to the Flouch Inn as a starting point for a Bleaklow Crossing. However, as the necessary numbers were not forthcoming, a quick change of plan was made for an assembly at Marple Station.
The folk listed above joined the group and travelled by train to Edale. No particular route was planned, but a start was made with the steep climb up to Ringing Roger. There were large patches of snow remaining on the hill and climbing over it was difficult. Naturally there was plenty of snowballing, which reached a peak on the rocky summit of Ringing Roger.

Woodhead to Glossop
Route: Woodhead, Far Black Clough, Barrow Stones, Bleaklow Stones, across Alport Head, Shelf Stones, down Little Clough to Shelf Brook, and so into Glossop.
The group left Marple at 0920 hrs and arrived at Woodhead at about 10.00. Early weather had been bright and cloudless, but by 10am the sky was largely covered by cumulus and, bearing in mind the forecast for the day, showers were expected - this proved wrong as the weather tended to improve as the day wore on.

Edale to Hayfield
Route: Edale, Crowden Brook, Crowden Towers, Woolpacks, near Kinder Low, North Edge, Kinder Downfall, Kinder Brook, Kinder Reservoir, Hayfield.
Party boarded the 9.20 train at Marple, arriving Edale about 9.55. Passing through the village we stayed at Fieldhead for roll call, then dallied at the shop, before turning left to cross the fields and landslide to Crowden Brook. As usual there was litter in the stream in the gulley alongside the camp site.

Hayfield Circular
A short and simple route was chosen from Hayfield to Hayfield Reservoir, up the Kinder Brook to the Downfall; up the side of the gorge, across the peat bogs to near Lowbrook Naze, along the Edge to William Clough, and so back to Hayfield via Nab Brow.
On the outward journey we met six scoutmasters from Birmingham on a weekend trek without their troops. Excellent and obviously capable chaps. Directed them to the Downfall and expected to meet them there later.
